Restore Verification and Backup Consistency Check

Restore Verification and Backup Consistency Check

Any data that is backed up should be kept secure and accessible in case of emergency. In order to ensure that, in the event of a problem, you can fully recover all of your information and system backups and resume working as soon as possible, it must also be current and undamaged. Consequently, a backup system must have choices for determining whether the data is accurate and retrievable.

Two key components of MSP360 Managed Backup assist in determining if backups are reliable and prepared for restoration: Restore the consistency and verification checks.

Restore Verification

You can use the Restore Verification feature to determine whether system image backups can be restored. A system image backup is a full backup of all the data on your computer or server, including the operating system, installed software, system configurations, drivers, and any items users have uploaded or downloaded. In the event of a catastrophe, you can recover your system and carry on working virtually exactly where you left off. By restoring the backup as a fully functional system on a virtual computer, you can use Restore Verification to determine whether the backup is recoverable.
The Restore Verification function operates as follows:

  1. It merely restores the portions of the backed-up data required to keep the system running. Due of the small size of these pieces, it doesn’t take very long.
  2. These components are assembled into a Hyper-V virtual machine that MSP360 Managed Backup mounts and logs into.

You’ll see a note with an explanation if something goes wrong. If everything is in order, you can restore the system from this backup and it will function flawlessly.

When establishing the image-based backup strategy, turn on Restore Verification and select whether it should be executed during complete backups, incremental backups, or both.

Later, via the MSP360 Managed Backup agent on the system for which you need to do a check, you will be able to run verification as a test plan. Expand the necessary backup in the Backup Storage tab, locate the restoration point you wish to verify, right-click on it, and select restoration Verification from the menu.

If everything goes smoothly, you’ll receive the following email.

If something is off, the email will provide you specifics on what’s wrong and where it is.

Consistency Check: Mandatory and Full

You may monitor the condition of the data that is backed up in your storage with the aid of Consistency Check. Naturally, you transmit undamaged files there, but there is no assurance that they won’t be affected during the retention term. This might occur, for instance, due to server-related technological issues (because, despite major storage providers’ “11 nines” durability, this is still not 100% accurate) or a human aspect.

A backup strategy must include a mild consistency check, which confirms that all the files needed for a restore are present in the storage and there have been no data losses. It is executed before to carrying out any backup plans and only impacts the current backup generation. MSP360 Managed Backup compels a full backup if there are any issues.

Although the entire consistency check is enabled by default, you can utilise just the obligatory consistency check if you prefer to be warned about potential data loss across all generations. It is shown in the backup wizard’s Consistency Check and Restore Verification stage.

This indicates that prior to the start of the plan, all backup generations are examined. You’ll be informed if MSP360 Managed Backup discovers any errors in earlier versions. The current and future generations are unaffected by this.

Although the full consistency check takes longer than the required option, it helps preserve your restore points available for usage. Your speed, connection, the volume of saved data, and other factors will all affect how long the checking procedure takes.

Conclusion

You can be sure that you have all the information regarding the validity of your data with MSP360 Managed Backup 5.3; if any files or system images become damaged, you’ll be aware of it, and all the images and virtual machines may be tested for functionality. You can correct everything in time and avoid information loss if some data is rendered invalid. Do not hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions.
